        Why Church?

    September 14-15, 2013

    Pastor Rulon Combs

The Church Was ____________________   And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  Matthew 16:18   Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1   It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13   The Church Is And Always Has Been God’s Best Plan To Connect People To ____________   Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20   “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15   Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5-6   The other core values we have are dependent upon a burning and ever growing love for God   The Church Is God’s Best Plan To Connect People To _________   There will be a direct correlation between loving God and loving the community of believers He has placed you in   Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40   The principles of loving God and loving others can never be separated   “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."   John 13:35   "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34   The Church God’s Best Plan To Connect People To _____________   Connecting people to their God given purpose is helping them discover how they can help others Connect to Christ and Connect to Community   But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Psalm 33:11   "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep…”   Acts 13:36   When we discover God’s purpose for our life, we discover our purpose in life.   My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:15-16   We have been given the awesome privilege to represent Christ here on Earth and to advance His Kingdom, His purposes, His plans    And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.                             2 Corinthians 5:19-20   If we are going to be a healthy church, we must put a high priority on:
    • Connecting People to Christ
    • Connecting People to Community
    • Connecting People to their God Given Purpose

    Luke 15

Strategic Ways That We Can Reach Out

To The Prodigals Of Cottage Grove

Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them... Luke 15:11-13     If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14   You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord…           Jeremiah 29:13-14   "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.     Luke 15:13     After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. Luke 15:14-16

Four Specific Things You Can Pray For

    The Prodigals In Your Life

Pray that they would quickly come to the end of their resources.   Pray that the pig pen brings about examination   After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! Luke 15:14-17   There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 16:25    Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard. Proverbs 13:15    Pray that the pig pen brings a change of perspective   I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ Luke 15:18-19   True change will usually involve four things a)      Plan of Action: “I will go back to my father” b)      Proper Humility: “I am not worthy” c)      Healthy Dependence: “I will be a servant” d)     Follow Through: Prodigal son actually went home.   Pray that the prodigal would be free from fear   Fear of rejection         Fear of demands   Fear of being judged   At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. Titus 3:3     Fear of humiliation   Keep in mind that the father dealt with real pain   Please let go of false guilt Refuse to give up hope Celebrate small victories   Pray for grace      encounters

Winning the Battle of the Mind

    August 31-Sept 1, 2013

    Pastor Rulon T. Combs

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9   “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:11-12

Most Of Satan’s Attacks Take Place On The Battlefield Of The Mind: Control The Mind… Control The Man

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22:37-39

The Mind Is The Steering Wheel Of Our Actions

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8    Philippians 3:17-20       Mark 7:21-23          Ephesians 2:1-3

There Is A Powerful Connection Between Our Thoughts And Our Actions

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2     James 1:13-15

God Knows Exactly What You Are Thinking

O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. Psalm 139:1-2     Psalm 139:23-24         Psalm 26:2-3                           Matthew 9:4

If I Am Going To Love God With All My Mind, Then I Will Take Responsibility For My Thought Life

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.          Colossians 3:5-8     Philippians 4:8             Hebrews 3:1              2 Corinthians 10:4-6

If I Am Going To Love God With My Mind, Then I Will Choose To Renew It With A Regular Diet Of Truth

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.            Psalm 119:9     Psalm 119:105                Psalm 119:133                    Psalm 1:1-3

If I Am Going To Love God With All My Mind Then I Will Commit His Word To Memory

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.         Psalm 119:11     Deuteronomy 11:18

    Facets Of A Mother’s Love

    • A mother’s love is a sacrificial love
    • A mother’s love is a protective love
    • A mother’s love is a nurturing love
God’s love is also protective, nurturing and sacrificial, because we love through him.    “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.”  Genesis 1:27   We were created to love as God loves us!

    A Wise Ruling

16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us. 19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.” But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king. 23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!” 27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.” 28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.                    1 Kings 3:16 – 28

“Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals.  You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. AND I WILL PUT ENMITY BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN, AND BETWEEN YOUR OFFSPRING AND HERS; HE WILL CRUSH YOUR HEAD, AND YOU WILL STRIKE HIS HEEL.” Genesis 3:14

JOCHEBED - was the mother of Moses. Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son.  When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.  But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch.  Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. Exodus 2:1

In my distress I screamed to the Lord for his help……But the Lord held me steady.  He led me to a place of safety, for HE DELIGHTS IN ME. Psalm 18:6-19

    Who Is This Jesus?

    John 12:12-15

    Palm Sunday Weekend

The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast (Passover) heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,  "Hosanna!"  "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"  "Blessed is the King of Israel!"  14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,  15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."  John 12:12-15

Who was this man riding into Jerusalem anyway?

He is our Savior    Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  Luke 2:11   But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior…  Titus 3:4-6   He is our Redeemer   Christ redeemed (ransomed) us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."  14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.     Galatians 3:13-14   For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed (ransomed) from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.  1 Peter 1:18-19   He is our High Priest   For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.            Hebrews 4:15-16   He is our King   "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."  John 12:15   “But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Matthew 12:28   Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."  Luke 17:20-21   He is the Good Shepherd   "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me…”  “The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”  John 10:14, 25-28   He is our Healer   Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.      Isaiah 53:4-5   When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. Matthew 8:16   He is our Teacher   "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”  Matthew 7:24   "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”  John 14:25-26 He is our Lord   On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"  20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the LordJohn 20:19-20

    How to Handle Promotion

    March 16-17, 2013

    Nehemiah 5:14-18

We all know that adversity is a painful teacher   We have all had to deal with the testing that comes from adversity   There is a test, however, that can be worse than adversity: Advancement
    • Do no lift up your horn on high,
Do not speak with insolent pride.   For not from the east, nor from the west, Nor from the desert comes exaltation;   But God is Judge; He puts down one, and exalts another.  Psalm 75:5-7   Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year… Nehemiah 5:14     What was Nehemiah’s reaction to his appointment? Acceptance   "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none…” Ezekiel 22:30   When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29:2  NKJV   Promotion Always Comes with Challenges   Promotion Brings Privileges   Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year — twelve years — neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor. Nehemiah 5:14   Promotion almost always comes with new benefits and privileges   Promotions Threaten Policies   But the earlier governors — those preceding me — placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people…Nehemiah 5:15   Promotions Involve Projects   Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land. Nehemiah 5:16    Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. Nehemiah 5:17-18   Promotion Always Affects People  It is critical when we are promoted that we maintain a sincere love for people
    • But the earlier governors — those preceding me — placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that. Nehemiah 5:15
One of the huge temptations when God promotes us is to use people   Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land  Nehemiah 5:16 Nehemiah reiterates this perspective at the end of verse 18   …In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people. Nehemiah 5:18  Even God’s people can fall into the trap of defining greatness by the world’s standards.   "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." Mark 10:37     We need learn to use things and serve people instead of the other way around   Conclusion:
    • God is in the process of promoting some of the people in this room
    • What is God calling you to do?

    Luke 17:11-19 Ten Lepers

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”   "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 1.      The men ______________ Jesus   “Who do people say that I am?” So they answered and said, "John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:18  Be sure that you are walking on the path that God has made. For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.Jeremiah 29:11  Fall at the feet of Jesus

    God Cares About My Money

    March 2-3, 2012

    Nehemiah 5

Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their Jewish brothers. Some were saying, "We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain." Others were saying, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine." Still others were saying, "We have had to borrow money to pay the king's tax on our fields and vineyards. Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our countrymen and though our sons are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others."  Nehemiah 5:1-5   It is often in the arena of finances that our faith is tested   Jesus reminds us that we ultimately have to choose between serving God and serving money.   "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:24    It is only after we have made that critical shift that we are able to trust Him in this important area   Matthew 6:25-27   We are admonished to cultivate a heart of generosity…because generosity demonstrates radical faith in God.   Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. Luke 6:38a     There is a direct correlation between our giving and the level of blessing we walk in…   For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."   Luke 6:38b     Jesus tells us that if you want to discover what is important to someone, all you have to do is follow the money   "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”          Matthew 6:19-21   Radical faith and radical love are often demonstrated by radical giving
    • Abraham and Isaac – Gen 22
    • He made a radical commitment to give his most precious possession
    • The people of Israel who brought offerings for the tabernacle
      Exodus 36:4-7
    • Elijah and the widow – 1 Kings 17 – the oil and the flower
    • Zacchaeus - Luke 19 – Zacchaeus did something that prompted Jesus to make an incredible statement…
    • Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house…”
    • But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
    • Paul and the Macedonians  -  2 Corinthians 8:1-4
    • God and his love – John 3 – For God so loved that he gave…

    Final Thoughts From Nehemiah

The Nobles were more interested in their own work then they were in the work of God   The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.  Nehemiah 3:5   God loved them too much to let them continue using others… Response: Verses 12-13 They had a change of heart…they lined up their lives with the Word of God…the Bible calls that repentance They added action to their repentance and made a radical financial commitment They did it that day…they didn’t drag their feet or procrastinate Finally we see that they followed through and they kept their promise

Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, "The strength of the laborers is giving out…” Nehemiah 4:10a

    A loss of perspective

“…there is so much rubble…” Nehemiah 4:10b    A loss of confidence   “…we cannot rebuild the wall." Nehemiah 4:10c

    A loss of security

Also our enemies said, "Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work." Nehemiah 4:11

Five Strategies That Will Help You

    Defeat Discouragement

    Remember, Reconnect, and Rearm

Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. Nehemiah 4:13

    Refocus on the Lord

After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome…” Nehemiah 4:14   You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3     Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

    Reestablish Balance

“…fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to his own work. Nehemiah 4:14b-15   From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me. Nehemiah 4:16-18   There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,  a time to kill and a time to heal,a time to tear down and a time to build,  a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

    Review Your Emergency Plan

Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!" Nehemiah 4:19-20

Recommit to Being there for Others

So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. 22 At that time I also said to the people, "Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and workmen by day." 23 Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water. Nehemiah 4:21-23
