        Why Church?

    September 14-15, 2013

    Pastor Rulon Combs

The Church Was ____________________   And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  Matthew 16:18   Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1   It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13   The Church Is And Always Has Been God’s Best Plan To Connect People To ____________   Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20   “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15   Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5-6   The other core values we have are dependent upon a burning and ever growing love for God   The Church Is God’s Best Plan To Connect People To _________   There will be a direct correlation between loving God and loving the community of believers He has placed you in   Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40   The principles of loving God and loving others can never be separated   “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."   John 13:35   "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34   The Church God’s Best Plan To Connect People To _____________   Connecting people to their God given purpose is helping them discover how they can help others Connect to Christ and Connect to Community   But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Psalm 33:11   "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep…”   Acts 13:36   When we discover God’s purpose for our life, we discover our purpose in life.   My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:15-16   We have been given the awesome privilege to represent Christ here on Earth and to advance His Kingdom, His purposes, His plans    And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.                             2 Corinthians 5:19-20   If we are going to be a healthy church, we must put a high priority on:
    • Connecting People to Christ
    • Connecting People to Community
    • Connecting People to their God Given Purpose

    Reaching the Prodigals

    September 7-8, 2013

    Luke 15

Strategic Ways That We Can Reach Out

To The Prodigals Of Cottage Grove

Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them... Luke 15:11-13     If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14   You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord…           Jeremiah 29:13-14   "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.     Luke 15:13     After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. Luke 15:14-16

Four Specific Things You Can Pray For

    The Prodigals In Your Life

Pray that they would quickly come to the end of their resources.   Pray that the pig pen brings about examination   After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! Luke 15:14-17   There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 16:25    Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard. Proverbs 13:15    Pray that the pig pen brings a change of perspective   I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ Luke 15:18-19   True change will usually involve four things a)      Plan of Action: “I will go back to my father” b)      Proper Humility: “I am not worthy” c)      Healthy Dependence: “I will be a servant” d)     Follow Through: Prodigal son actually went home.   Pray that the prodigal would be free from fear   Fear of rejection         Fear of demands   Fear of being judged   At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. Titus 3:3     Fear of humiliation   Keep in mind that the father dealt with real pain   Please let go of false guilt Refuse to give up hope Celebrate small victories   Pray for grace      encounters

Winning the Battle of the Mind

    August 31-Sept 1, 2013

    Pastor Rulon T. Combs

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9   “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:11-12

Most Of Satan’s Attacks Take Place On The Battlefield Of The Mind: Control The Mind… Control The Man

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22:37-39

The Mind Is The Steering Wheel Of Our Actions

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8    Philippians 3:17-20       Mark 7:21-23          Ephesians 2:1-3

There Is A Powerful Connection Between Our Thoughts And Our Actions

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2     James 1:13-15

God Knows Exactly What You Are Thinking

O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. Psalm 139:1-2     Psalm 139:23-24         Psalm 26:2-3                           Matthew 9:4

If I Am Going To Love God With All My Mind, Then I Will Take Responsibility For My Thought Life

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.          Colossians 3:5-8     Philippians 4:8             Hebrews 3:1              2 Corinthians 10:4-6

If I Am Going To Love God With My Mind, Then I Will Choose To Renew It With A Regular Diet Of Truth

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.            Psalm 119:9     Psalm 119:105                Psalm 119:133                    Psalm 1:1-3

If I Am Going To Love God With All My Mind Then I Will Commit His Word To Memory

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.         Psalm 119:11     Deuteronomy 11:18

    Love One Another

    Abiding in Love Part 17

    August 24-25, 3013

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”  John 15:5

    Practical Applications Of Love

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10     Be Devoted To One Another Devoted: kindly affectioned (KJV) loving affection, prone to love, loving tenderly; chiefly of the reciprocal tenderness of parents and children   We Need To Honor One Another, Above Ourselves   Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Romans 12:16     Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits. Romans 12:16   AMP   Harmony: to be of the same mind, that is, agree together, to cherish the same views, to be harmonious   Watch your attitude   Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way.       Romans 14:13     Stop Passing Judgment On One Another…   Don’t Put Obstacles In Your Brother’s Way   May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans 15:5-7     Spirit Of Unity: Like Mindedness   Accept One Another: To Take As One's Companion   I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. 1 Corinthians 1:10     You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13     Serve: To Be A Slave, Serve, To Do Service;   Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3       Support Each Other… Lift Each Other Up… Hold Each Other Up
    • Humble, gentle, patient
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32     Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21     Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16     Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1Thessalonians 5:11     And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24     Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8

    The Most Excellent Way

    Abiding in Love Part 16

    August 17-18, 2013

Paul reveals a principle so important, that it eclipses or supersedes the operation of spiritual gifts in the church.
    • In chapter 12, Paul refers to this principle as, “The Most Excellent Way
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.                           1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Tragic Results Of Attempting To Operate In The Gifts Of The Spirit Without The Fruit Of The Spirit… Which Is Love

      I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal…1 Corinthians 13:1
    • It eliminates the effectiveness of the gift to change hearts
    • It also has a connotation of being irritating
      I am nothing…1 Corinthians 13:2
    • It devalues me and eliminates my effectiveness in Kingdom work
    • It limits my ability to be promoted
      I gain nothing…1 Corinthians 13:3
    • I lose any reward the Lord had planned for me
    • Very likely lose influence with the very people God called me to minister to

What Does Agape Love Looks Like?

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.1 Corinthians 13: 6-7   Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love One Another Part 3

    Abiding in Love Part 15

    August 10-11, 2013

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”  John 15:9-12    They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.  Acts 2:42-47

    They Devoted Themselves To

    Several Important Things:

They Devoted Themselves To The Apostles’ Teaching Or Doctrine   They Were Constantly Diligent In The Area Of Fellowship   The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone…”          Genesis 2:18   Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…  Hebrews 10:25   As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17   A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment. Proverbs 18:1   They Broke Bread Together: Communion Was A Regular Part Of Their Time Together   They Devoted Themselves To Prayer:..Both Individual And Corporate   We need to pray together with others in our church family   "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:19     They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:14     When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. Acts 4:24     After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.   Acts 4:31     So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. Acts 12:5     When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Acts 12:12     This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us-- whatever we ask-- we know that we have what we asked of him.                   I John 5:14-15     There will be a correlation between the unity a church has, the spiritual impact a church has, and the value they put on praying together   Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. Acts 2:43   All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need Acts 2:44-45   Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:46-47

"As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.”      John 15:9 NKJV   We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.                    1 John 4:19-21   Two Powerful Statements That Jesus Made So We Can Get A Better Understanding Of What Loving Others Actually Looks Like   "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you…as I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 15:9, John 13:34   The model of perfect love is found in the relationships within the Godhead…it is the measure of how we are to love each other   “…the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.”  John 14:31   There is a correlation between submission and expressing genuine love
    • Submission…Not my will, but Yours be done…
Mutual submission, then, is an expression of genuine love for each other   Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21   Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. Ephesians 5:22   Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.           Hebrews 13:17   You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints. I urge you, brothers, 16 to submit to such as these and to everyone who joins in the work, and labors at it.  1 Corinthians 16:15-16   The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.         John 3:35   For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. John 5:20   Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.         Romans 12:15   I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me…  John 17:22-23   Another facet of wholehearted love modeled for us in the Godhead is unity: one in purpose, one in heart, one in mind   How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!      Psalm 133:1   May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6   Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  Ephesians 4:3   …make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose  Philippians 2:2   "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.” John 13:31-32   Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  Philippians 2:3   “Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves… On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” John 14:10-11, 20

    The ‘Greatest Commandment’ Principle

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."   Matthew 22:37-40   Jesus qualified how we should love others. He said, “Love your neighbor as yourself…”   If We Are Going To Love Our Brothers And Sisters Well, We Are Going To Have To See Them Through God’s Eyes   They Are His Church   And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  Matthew 16   They Are His Holy and Royal Priests   But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood1 Peter 2:9   They Are His Temple   Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16   They Are His Family   …You are citizens along with all of God's holy people.       If I am going to learn to love myself in a way that honors God, I must have a fresh revelation of His love   Ephesians 3:16-19   God’s love is expressed in many ways throughout the New Testament                   1 John 3:1 AMP         1 John 4:15-19        Romans 8:36-39   Knowing Who We Are In Christ Can Help Change Our Perspective   It is critical that we renew our minds with who the Bible says we are rather than believe who our environment says we are   Matthew 4:1-3                       Matthew 4:5-6

So Who Does The Bible Say That We Really Are?

We Are His Church   "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."  Matthew 16:15-19   We Are His Holy and Royal Priests   You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  1 Peter 2:5   1 Peter 2:9   We Are His Temple   In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.  Ephesians 2:21-22   1 Corinthians 3:16-17     We Are His Family   So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's familyEphesians 2:19  NLT   We Are His Body   And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.  Ephesians 1:22-23    1 Corinthians 12:27   We Are His Army   Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer.                      2 Timothy 2:3-4   2 Corinthians 10:3-4   We Are His Sheep   John 10:14-15   “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27   We Are His Ambassadors   …he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.  2 Corinthians 5:19-20   We Are His Bride    Ephesians 5:32  (Phillips)   Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.  Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear."  Revelation 19:7-8   We Are His Branches   "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”  John 15:5-6   We Are His Saints   Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God…To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
