  “I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jeremiah 29:11   Wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope. Psalms 130:5   And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.  Psalm 34:7 Happy  is he who  has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope  is in the LORD his God, Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that  is in them; Who keeps truth forever, Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners. Psalms 146:5-7   

Four Key Building Blocks Of Hope

  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.                 Jeremiah 29:12,13   Your Actions   Therefore, prepare your mind for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1Peter 1:13   Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.   Proverbs 20:11   A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. Matthew 7:18-20   Prayer   There is power in prayer   After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn’t we drive it out?" He replied,  "This kind can come out only by prayer."       Mark 9:28, 29   How often should we pray?   Pray without ceasing  - 1 Thessalonians 5:17   How should we pray?   Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude.   Colossians 4:2 MSG   Faith   Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.    Hebrews 11:1   For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.        James 2:26  
  • To grow your faith in God you need to NOT:
  • focus on the areas in your life that He promises to take care of
  • fall into the trap of fleshly desires
  • stress about collecting more worldly possessions and wealth
 
  • To grow your faith in God you need TO:
  • be in prayer daily
  • be in God’s word daily
  • live a life of righteousness
  Be Focused On Jesus   "Lord, if it’s you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Matthew 14:28-32   I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.     Genesis 41

     

      In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him. Genesis 41:8    

    1.     The Answers To Life Are Found In God, Not In The World

      Nightmares happen when we let the world determine our dreams   Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." Genesis 41:15     "I cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh…   "but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires." Genesis 41:16  

    2.     Trials can make or break our relationship with God

      "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33     Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  James 1:2-4     The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. 38 So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?" Genesis 41:37-38  

    3.     Live a life that demands an explanation

      Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. 51 Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, "It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household." 52 The second son he named Ephraim and said, "It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering."    Genesis 41:50-52

      Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. Genesis 37:3-4     Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it." His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.        Genesis 37:5-8

      Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.          1 Peter 4:12-19

    Genesis 22

     

    Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." Genesis 22:1-2 

      1.   How could God ask such a thing?

             a.       He is God… He can do whatever He wants.                                                                                          b.       He is God… and His ways are beyond my understanding   But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?'"  21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?               Romans 9:20-21     The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge… Proverbs 1:7     The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. Deuteronomy 29:29     For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,"  declares the Lord. 9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9  

     2.   How could Abraham do such a thing?

    • He knew the promise of God

    • He knew the nature of God

    • He knew the power of God

      Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." Genesis 22:3-5     By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:17-19      

    Life Lessons We Can Learn From Abraham

     1.      Our Faith Will Be Tested

      In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith — of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire — may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:6-7    During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered… Hebrews 5:7-9  

     2.      We Will Never Be Tested Beyond Our Ability.

      No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13     Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4  

     3.      God Will Test Us, But He Will Never Tempt Us

      When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:13-15     Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7-8  

     4.      The Right Answer Is Always Obedience

      We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6     Genesis 22:5-18   "If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

    The Call of Abram – Chapter 12

      The Lord had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.”I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." So Abram left, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Genesis 12:1-5    1.      God Uses Whoever He Wants To Accomplish His Plans   God’s Covenant with Abram – Chapter 15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." But Abram said, "O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." Then the word of the Lord came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars — if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. He also said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it." Genesis 15:1-7    2.      God’s Promises Often Seem Unrealistic   Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah. Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.        Genesis 11:29-30   3.      Never Attempt To Accomplish God’s Purposes Through Fleshly Means   So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-26     God reiterates His promise to make Abram the father of nations (Abraham) Chapter 17 God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?" And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!" Genesis 17:15-17     The Lord appears to Abraham again and adds a time frame to the promise. Chapter 18 Then the Lord said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son."Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?" Then the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son." Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh." Genesis 18:10-15   4.      Even People Of Great Faith Occasionally Deal With Doubt.  

    The Promise Fulfilled – Chapter 21

      Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Genesis 21:1-3    5.      When God Makes A Promise, He Will Bring It To Pass   God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?    Numbers 23:19     Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."     Eight Ways That You Can Have A Better Pastor

     1.      Pray For My Protection From The Temptation Of The Devil.  Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.                1 Chronicles 21:1     This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.                   1 Chronicles 21:7 (NIV)   So the LORD sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead. 1 Chronicles 21:14     2.      Pray For My Family.  If The Devil Can’t Get Me, He Will Work On My Family.  Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) 1 Timothy 3:1-5    3.      Pray For My Preaching.  God Has Chosen That The Preaching Of His Word Be A Significant Key To Your Growth.  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21    Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel… Ephesians 6:19    Colossians 4:3-4           II Thessalonians 3:1    Matthew 4:17, Mark 1:38, Mark 3:14, 2 Timothy 4:1-2, Colossians 1:25,          1 Corinthians 1:4-6    4.      Pray For My Perception , My Wisdom, And The Ability To Make Right Choices In All Situations.  Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-- not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2-3    For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience… Colossians 1:9-11    5.      Pray That My Passion Would Increase.  Pray That The Lord Would Help Me To Deal With Discouragement, Depression, And Emotional Exhaustion.  Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?  2 Corinthians 11:28-29     2 Corinthians 2:3-4     1 Thessalonians 3:5-8    6.      Pray For Perseverance And Endurance: Physically, Morally, And Spiritually.  I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. 31 Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea and that my service in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints there, 32 so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and together with you be refreshed. Romans 15:30-32     2 Corinthians 1:8-11     Acts 12:5-7    7.      Pray That My Priorities Would Be Directed By The Holy Spirit.  So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."     Three Choices That Result In Joy

      You Will Have Joy When You Choose To Hear The Good News   But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”  Luke 2:10   I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Romans 1:16    “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”   James 1:2-3     Your Joy Will Increase When You Choose To Do What God Says   When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.  Luke 2:15-16   “The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” Psalm 19:8      “Light shines on the godly, and joy on those who do right”.  Psalm 97:11 NLT   You Will Have Joy When You Choose To Tell Someone Else   But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”  Luke 2:10   “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”   Luke 2:17-18   “With joy they should tell what He has done.” Psalm 107:22   “I tell you there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who changes his heart and life, than over ninety-nine good people who don’t need to change.”  Luke 15:7  NCV  Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.”  Psalm 126:5    “Be full of joy in the Lord always.  I will say it again.  Be full of joy!” Philippians 4:4

    Philippians 4:4-8

     1.      Focus More On Christ This Season Than All The Hype    “Rejoice in the Lord always – delight, gladden ourselves in Him: again I say, Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4 AMP     Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. Hebrews 3:1     Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2    2.      Focus More On Others Than You Do Yourself   “Let all men know and perceive and recognize your unselfishness – your considerateness, your forbearing spirit. The Lord is near…He is coming soon”  Philippians 4:5 AMP   One of the core values of our faith is to focus on others, serve others, honor others…   Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4     Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.                                1 Corinthians 10:24    3.      Focus More On God’s Presence Than On Christmas Presents    “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything…” Philippians 4:6a AMP   It is critical that we take the time to cultivate the Presence of God in our lives 4.      Focus More On Being Thankful For What You Do Have Rather Than Focusing On What You Don’t Have   “in every circumstance and in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving continue to make your wants known to God.”             Philippians 4:6b AMP   Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15     Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Colossians 4:2     I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12     But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 1 Timothy 6:6-8    5.      Focus More On The Peace That God Offers Than On The Satisfaction The World Offers   “And God’s peace which transcends all understanding, shall garrison and mount guard over you hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7   Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: Isaiah 26:3-4     The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11     Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”      John 14:27     6.      Focus More On What Is Positive Than On The Negative   “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” Philippians 4:8 NIV   We have the freedom and the privilege to focus on the positive things in our lives…   Let what you say and what you meditate on bring pleasure to the Lord this season   May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14
