5 Expressions Of The Love Of God

   “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.”      Matthew 22:37-38  

One of the primary expressions of Love from the Son to the Father was obedience

  “…the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.”  John 14:31   “You are my friends if you do what I command.”  John 15:14  

Ways To Cultivate An Environment Of Obedience

  "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”  John 15:1-4   One of the ways we express wholehearted love is by being fruitful   We are called by Christ to bear fruit.        John 15:16   Being fruitful pleases God.            Colossians 1:10   Jesus reserved His severest judgment for the unfruitful.  Matthew 21:19   "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.John 15:1  

A Picture Of Co-Laboring Between The Father And The Son

  One of the expressions of love between the Father and the Son is partnership, co-laboring, interdependence  -  John 5:19  

The Father, The Son, And The Holy Spirit Are Extremely Concerned About Fruit In Our Lives… And Are Active In The Process

  John 15:2              Matthew 21:43  

Fruitfulness Is Critical In The Economy Of The Kingdom

The Father Continually Prunes Those Who Bear Even A Small Amount Of Fruit… So That They Will Be More Fruitful Still

  Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit. John 15:2 AMP  

He wants to identify and remove anything in your life that threatens your fruitfulness.

The fruit Jesus is talking about represents measurable evidence of the born again experience

 
  • Fruit identifies what kind of tree it comes from
  Galatians 5:22-23               John 13:34-35          Matthew 7:15-20  
  • Fruit also contains the seeds for reproduction
Matthew 28:19-20   You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. John 15:3  

Jesus Makes A Distinction Between Salvation And Fruit

Jesus Makes This Perfectly Clear In The Great Commission

  "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."   Matthew 28:18-20  
  • The call to make disciples goes much deeper... it means to teach them about the gospel of the Kingdom
  “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14   The Gospel Or Good News Of The Kingdom Includes The Interaction Of The King And His People: Particularly His Wholehearted Love For Us  

Salvation Is The Critical First Step To Participating In The Kingdom Of God… To Advancing God’s Purposes And Plans In The Earth

    A MOTHER’S LOVE

    Facets Of A Mother’s Love

    • A mother’s love is a sacrificial love
    • A mother’s love is a protective love
    • A mother’s love is a nurturing love
      God’s love is also protective, nurturing and sacrificial, because we love through him.    “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.”  Genesis 1:27   We were created to love as God loves us!

    A MOTHER’S LOVE IS A SACRIFICIAL LOVE

     

    A Wise Ruling

    16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us. 19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.” But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king. 23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!” 27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.” 28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.                    1 Kings 3:16 – 28   

    GOD’S SACRIFICIAL LOVE

      “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals.  You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. AND I WILL PUT ENMITY BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN, AND BETWEEN YOUR OFFSPRING AND HERS; HE WILL CRUSH YOUR HEAD, AND YOU WILL STRIKE HIS HEEL.” Genesis 3:14  

     A MOTHER’S LOVE IS A PROTECTIVE LOVE

      JOCHEBED - was the mother of Moses. Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son.  When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.  But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch.  Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. Exodus 2:1  

    GOD’S PROTECTIVE LOVE

                    In my distress I screamed to the Lord for his help……But the Lord held me steady.  He led me to a place of safety, for HE DELIGHTS IN ME. Psalm 18:6-19  

    A MOTHER’S LOVE IS A NURTURING LOVE

    What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: Psalm 8:4-6     But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:4-6  

    “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne…”      Revelation 3:21

      To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and has made us kings and priests…  Revelation 1:5-6  NKJV  

    Quality Of Love That We Are To Cultivate For God

     

    God wants us to love him with the same passion that He loves us

      Jesus replied: “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and greatest commandment.”Matthew 22:37-38  

    He wants us to respond to Him with the same wholehearted love that He has for us.

      And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. Romans 5:5   We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19-20  

    Love God with all your heart… kardia: the center and seat of spiritual life

     

    With all your soul…psuche: breath

      “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”  Matthew 16:26     The soul experiences a variety of emotions   Jesus said "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," Mark 14:34    And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord…" Luke 1:46     “I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. “Isaiah 61:10      

    With all your mind - dianoia:  deep thought, the faculty, imagination, understanding.

      May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14  

    With all your strength…ischus:  ability, force, strength, power, might ability, might ([-ily]), power, strength.

     

    We Are To Love God Wholeheartedly

      As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?       Psalm 42:1-2   Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26   O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.     Psalm 63:1-3   My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you…          Isaiah 26:9  

    Complete Obedience

      “…the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.”  John 14:31    “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.” John 15:10  

    What Does Practical Obedience Looks Like?

     

    I express wholehearted love when I put the highest priority on His Kingdom

      But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Matthew 6:33  

    I express wholehearted love to God when I demonstrate Godly love to others

      "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34   "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.”  John 15:9   “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."         John 13:35

Now remain in my love.    John 15:9   If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. John 15:10    I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.       John 15:11   “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”       Jeremiah 29:13

    God Loves Us

     

    God Loves Us Is Revealed In The Relationship Between The Father, Son, And Holy Spirit

      "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you…”  John 15:9   “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”  John 17:23  

    We Need The Holy Sprit’s Power To Understand God’s Love For Us…

      I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe…  Ephesians 1:17-19   Ephesians 3:16-19  

    God’s Love Is Expressed In Many Ways Throughout The New Testament

      How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1   1 John 3:1 AMP                    1 John 3:1 KJV  

    His Love Is There Before We Even Bow A Knee To Christ

      "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16-17   Romans 5:8   Jesus Expresses His Love By Sharing His Glory With Us   I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22-23   John 17: 24  

    Jesus Expresses His Love By Sharing His Dominion With Us

      Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earthGenesis 1:26 NKJV  

    Jesus Expresses His Love Through A Deep Desire To Be Near Us Forever

      "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:9-11  

    The Great Commandment

      Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  Matthew 22:37   “This is the first and greatest commandment.”  Matthew 22:38   God is love   God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.  1 John 4:16b  

    Five Distinct Expressions Of God’s Love

     God’s love for God God’s love for His people Our love for God Our love for ourselves Our love for others   Jesus admonishes us to abide in His love: to meditate on it, to dream about it, to read about it, to pray about it, and to express it in a variety of ways.   "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.”  John 15:9   God’s love for God  The first expression of perfect love is found in the relationships within the Trinity   “…the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.”  John 14:31   The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. John 3:35   For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. John 5:20 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me…  John 17:22-23   Another facet of wholehearted love expressed in the Godhead is unity: one in purpose, one in heart, one in mind  The Trinity is the theology that describes one God who forever dwells in three distinct persons who are coequal.  This unity and oneness is the foundation of perfect love.   "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.” John 13:31-32     “Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves… On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” John 14:10-11, 20 The unity of purpose, of passion, and of heart in the Godhead, reveals the nature, quality, and intensity of God’s love. The Holy Spirit desperately desires to reveal these truths to us. Wholehearted love is expressed in many ways:
    • Obedience, mutual trust, mutual revelation, unity of purpose, mutual edification, interdependence,  co-laboring together
    It is critical that we study the relationships between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.   May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me…  John 17:23   How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!   1 John 3:1   I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.               Ephesians 3:17-19

    The Joy of Abiding in God’s Love

    John 15:9-10

     

     “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you...” John 15:9a     And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16-17    “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you...”   John 15:9b …Now remain in my love. NIV abide in My love. NKJV Make yourselves at home in my love. MSG …You must go on living in my lovePhillips continue ye in my love.  KJV   We are to abide in…or focus on living in God’s love…
    • Abiding is the life long process of discovering new aspects of God’s love
    • Abiding in it includes studying it and meditating on it…praying for fresh revelation
      Continuing in His love  also includes:
    • Receiving it…accepting it as our own…
    • Believing what the Word says about how much God loves us…
    • Then returning it to God…cultivating a hot burning love for Him
    • And letting it overflow to others…
      Ephesians 3:14-19    If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love…John 15:10a  

    Another Great Clue To What Abiding Or Remaining In His Love Looks Like

     
    • Cultivating a spirit of obedience increases our capacity to receive and feel more of God’s love.
    • To live in obedience to Jesus is to live in agreement with Him. We love God on His terms.
    • Sin defiles and dulls our heart and diminishes our capacity to feel and respond to His love.
      John 14:21           Matthew 5:8   What is Jesus talking about when he says, “my commands”?  
    • Love, forgiveness, giving and generosity, faith, motives, prayer, the kingdom, etc.
      Our obedience can grow in maturity over our entire lives… 1 John 1:8-2:2       If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.” John 15:10   Loving Him and keeping His commandments as more than obeying Him in our morality, speech, and finances.  
    • It includes fulfilling the ministry assignment that He gives us.
     
    •  “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” John 17:4
     
    • John 4:34             2 Timothy 4:6-7
      Abiding in Christ’s love includes being obedient to the assignment we have been given or the ‘race’ we have been called to run.  
    • It is critical that we do everything we can to finish the race we have been given…
      Run in such a way as to get the prize…    1 Corinthians 9:24-27      Hebrews 12:1   We all have a race to run…we all have an assignment to fulfill   "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.”  John 15:9-10  1.      Jesus loves you in the same way the Father loves Him  2.      He invites us to abide in, remain in, continue in that love…
    • By meditating on his love…
    • By studying His love in the Word
    • By singing about His love
    • By praying for greater revelation

    • We Are All Motivated By Intimacy
     
    • We Are Designed To Desire And Experience Intimacy On Several Levels
     
    • We Are Designed With A Built In Desire For Intimacy With The God Who Created Us

    Who did Jesus say He was?

      "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”  John 6:35     “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.”  John 10:9   "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die…”  John 11:25-26   "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" Jesus answered, "I am," Mark 14:61-62   "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6  

    He knew why He came

      "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”  John 10:1   “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life — only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." John 10:17-18   "We are going up to Jerusalem…and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise."  Mark 10:33-34   Our PAST Can Be FORGIVEN   For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23    But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8   He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:25   You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14     Our FUTURE Can Be SECURE   Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:27-28   “…we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence”.  2 Corinthians 4:14   “In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  John 14:2-3   “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.” John 17:3   "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16    “The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” John 10:10   Our PRESENT Can Be MADE NEW   What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.  1 Peter 1:3 MSG

    Palm Sunday Weekend

      The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast (Passover) heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,  "Hosanna!"  "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"  "Blessed is the King of Israel!"  14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,  15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."  John 12:12-15    

    Who was this man riding into Jerusalem anyway?

      He is our Savior    Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  Luke 2:11   But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior…  Titus 3:4-6   He is our Redeemer   Christ redeemed (ransomed) us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."  14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.     Galatians 3:13-14   For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed (ransomed) from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.  1 Peter 1:18-19   He is our High Priest   For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.            Hebrews 4:15-16   He is our King   "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."  John 12:15   “But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Matthew 12:28   Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."  Luke 17:20-21   He is the Good Shepherd   "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me…”  “The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”  John 10:14, 25-28   He is our Healer   Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.      Isaiah 53:4-5   When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. Matthew 8:16   He is our Teacher   "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”  Matthew 7:24   "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”  John 14:25-26 He is our Lord   On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"  20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.     Nehemiah 5:14-18

      We all know that adversity is a painful teacher   We have all had to deal with the testing that comes from adversity   There is a test, however, that can be worse than adversity: Advancement  
    • Do no lift up your horn on high,
    Do not speak with insolent pride.   For not from the east, nor from the west, Nor from the desert comes exaltation;   But God is Judge; He puts down one, and exalts another.  Psalm 75:5-7   Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year… Nehemiah 5:14     What was Nehemiah’s reaction to his appointment? Acceptance   "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none…” Ezekiel 22:30   When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29:2  NKJV   Promotion Always Comes with Challenges   Promotion Brings Privileges   Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year — twelve years — neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor. Nehemiah 5:14   Promotion almost always comes with new benefits and privileges   Promotions Threaten Policies   But the earlier governors — those preceding me — placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people…Nehemiah 5:15   Promotions Involve Projects   Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land. Nehemiah 5:16    Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. Nehemiah 5:17-18   Promotion Always Affects People  It is critical when we are promoted that we maintain a sincere love for people  
    • But the earlier governors — those preceding me — placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that. Nehemiah 5:15
    One of the huge temptations when God promotes us is to use people   Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land  Nehemiah 5:16 Nehemiah reiterates this perspective at the end of verse 18   …In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people. Nehemiah 5:18  Even God’s people can fall into the trap of defining greatness by the world’s standards.   "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." Mark 10:37     We need learn to use things and serve people instead of the other way around   Conclusion:
